A food allergy is a hypersensitivity reaction to a food protein. Symptoms can range from mild (hives, swelling, itching) to life-threatening (anaphylaxis).
Food allergies are caused by the body’s immune system mistaking a food protein as something harmful. The body produces antibodies to fight the “invader”. These antibodies then trigger other cells to release histamine and other chemicals, which cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
There is no cure for food allergies, but people with food allergies can take steps to manage their condition. This includes avoiding the foods that cause symptoms and carrying an epinephrine auto-injector (such as EpiPen) in case of anaphylaxis.
