A cramp is a sudden, involuntary muscle contraction or spasm. It can be quite painful and usually lasts from a few seconds to a minute.
The stomach is a muscular organ that performs several functions, including digestion and absorption of food, production of digestive juices, and temporary storage of food. The stomach muscles (called the gastric muscles) help mix and churn the food with the digestive juices to break it down into smaller pieces. These muscles also push the food through the small intestine. If they contract too strongly or too often, they can cause pain in the abdomen-a stomach cramp.
There are several things that can trigger stomach cramps, including eating too much or too quickly, eating high-fat foods.
It’s possible that you’re experiencing stomach cramps because of food poisoning. Food poisoning is a condition that results from eating foods that are contaminated with bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. If you think you have food poisoning, it’s important to see a doctor right away.
Other possible causes of stomach cramps after eating include:
– Gastroenteritis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestines)
– Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
– Ulcerative colitis (a chronic inflammatory disease of the colon)
– Crohn’s disease (a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the entire digestive tract)
