The human stomach is a muscular sac that stores and begins the digestion of food. The stomach has three tasks: it stores food, mixes food with digestive juices, and gradually empties its contents into the small intestine. The wall of the stomach has four layers: an inner layer of cells that secretes digestive juices; a middle layer of smooth muscle that churns and mixes the food; a protective outer layer of connective tissue; and a serous membrane that covers the outside of the stomach. The average adult stomach can hold about 1.5 liters (51 ounces) of food.
